About
One Telos is an engineering practice that helps teams make AI agents dependable. It is run by Ali Shah, who writes the essays and leads every engagement.
Ali Shah
Founder and principal. Eight years building distributed backend systems with Akka Cluster, Kafka, Kinesis, DynamoDB Streams, SQS and Fs2. Durability, idempotency and backpressure were the everyday problems in that work. They are now the problems agents have.
More recently, production AI delivery for manufacturing, accounting and e-commerce clients: RAG pipelines, evaluation frameworks, agent orchestration, and LLM observability with Langfuse.
Much of this work has been in high-stakes, high-volume settings: government tax services used by millions of taxpayers, financial pipelines at a regulated investment platform, and a streaming service’s launch in a new market. Alongside it, JVM performance work: GC analysis, concurrency profiling and thread-pool tuning.
The name
Telos is Greek for purpose, or intended end. The International AI Safety Report defines reliability as the degree to which an AI system works as its developer or user intended. The gap between what a system was meant to do and what it actually does is the work.
How we work
- Vendor-neutral. Recommendations follow your constraints. We don’t resell frameworks or platforms.
- Systems engineering, not prompt tuning. Most production failures are distributed-systems failures, and they are fixed with distributed-systems tools.
- Dated and versioned. Tools change monthly, so everything we publish carries a date and the versions it was checked against.
- Engineering, not legal advice. We build the record your compliance team needs. They decide what the rules require.
